Microsoft Advertising Vista on YouTube

I don’t like MSFT’s new operating system Vista. Frankly, I don’t think I’ve met many people who do. I’m happy with XP. (But, then again, I said the same thing about Windows 98 back in the day. Those who ended up purchasing computers with the Millenium edition (also known as ‘ME’) can sympathize.

Anyway, the blue monster, as cartoonist/blogger Hugh McLeod refers to Microsoft, has taken to none other than YouTube to try and convince people of Vista’s worth. It ain’t workin’. Somebody should have told them to turn comments off. Why? Because relatively few are flattering.

Comments such as “down with? vista!” and “Yeah, and I’ve been able to do this on XP for 6 years… Your point is?…” abound. Add to that the number of inane, stupid comments (which YouTube seems to be known for) and you have yourself a conversational media marketing mess!

It’s not that Microsoft should be penalized for using YouTube. Considering the videos deal with how to use specific features of the OS, it’s probably a pretty good venue… certainly a viral one.

But, that doesn’t remedy the issue for me. No matter how you advertise it, whether via expensive advertising campaigns or free viral video, Vista is not an operating system I want on my computer anytime soon. Spend all that money on making a better product and you won’t have to spend it on advertising. But, then again, unless you buy a Mac (I’m considering it) or run Linux, if you upgrade to new machine what choice do you have? Sooner or later, we’ll be running Vista, like it or not.

comments on is a better choice I think. In the spirit of Blue Monster, it shows our ability to listen. Not sure you could level that at some of the other OS vendors out there :)

  2. Vista works great for me on both new machines. I still use XP on my 3 older machines and they all play nice together. People really need to form their opinions through their own experience rather than aping the blatherings found on forums and blogs.

  3. Craig, I’m glad your experience has been positive. Mine, on the other hand, has not. That’s the main reason I’ve hung on to my three year old Dell.

  4. Paul, you’re not alone in that assessment. I have avoided installing Vista for months now. I may break down if MS releases Vista V.2. That could be a long way away, though.
