Is ‘Jumper’ first in a new franchise for 20th Century Fox?

The plot of ‘Jumper’ might be right at home in a future issue of Wired magazine. The main character can teleport wherever he wants to go, rounding out the film slogan, Anywhere is possible. That’d be a handy skill next time you’re stuck in traffic. The  L. A. Times says the film was headed for a five-day total of approximately $40 million, including Thursday’s opening for Valentine’s Day. Fox told the paper the film’s primary audience comprises males younger than 25. The futuristic plot has an additional weapon in the presence of Samuel L. Jackson. According to the official Jumper Web site, Jackson’s films have grossed more money in box office sales than any other actor in the history of filmmaking.

That doesn’t surprise me. I got permanently hooked on Jackson after seeing the classic ‘Pulp Fiction.’ What an immortal role Jackson created in the character of Jules.

Audiences wisely don’t care how a film like ‘Jumper’ does with the critics, but it’s worth pointing out that Oscars have rarely if ever gone to a science fiction movie. Fox is capitalizing on the action approach director Doug Liman also applied in the ‘Bourne Identity’ franchise. If Liman’s latest film comes even close to Bourne, Fox should be happy with its franchise potential.
