Dunkin’ Donuts to Offer News and Sports Highlights

“I’ll have three glazed, a latte and an order of sports highlights to go, please.” In a few weeks that’s what you might be saying (Euphemistically speaking, of course). The largest retailer of fat fried in fat covered with fat, Dunkin’ Donuts, has teamed with Yahoo to to co-brand a social network site and video programming with content from many of the top networks and agencies.

A Dunkin’-branded video news round-up will launch April 9, followed by the social network community Dunkin’ Lounge within Yahoo Groups in May, where consumers can share stories and ideas, says MediaPost.

The news and sports part I can see. After all, a quick run-through of those items makes sense over morning coffee. It’s the “where consumers can share stories and ideas” part I’m not sure I get. I’m trying to conceive of what those topics of conversation might consist of.

I don’t mean to sound like a cynic. After all, I like donuts as much as the next person, maybe a little much actually

Perhaps those stories would be of the same variety as people might have sitting across from each other at the workplace chowing down on the dozen or so donuts the boss brought in that morning to placate hungry employees too lazy to fix themselves a decent (even healthy) breakfast.

Yet and still, it will be of interest to me to see if a social network built around donuts can get traction. Stranger things have happened.
