Great Walk to Beijing to Fight Cancer

Olivia Newton-JohnI’m a huge fan of cancer walks. Years ago I worked for the American Cancer Society as a Relay For Life specialist. I’ve also participated in Komen Race For The Cure walks, both as a volunteer and walker.

I just learned about a walk that may put all others to shame, at least in so far as distance is concerned. In April, Olivia Newton John will be joined by international stars and cancer survivors to walk 228kms along the Great Wall of China in just 21 days. The event, called The Great Walk to Beijing, will raise funds to build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre, Melbourne Australia, and enable research into the improved treatment and ultimately a cure for cancer.

She will be joined by a star-studded cast too. Looking at the Web site I see the likes of Joan Rivers, Leeza Gibbons, Sir Cliff Richard and others. Of course, the biggest stars are the thousands of cancer survivors who will be joining in. The event takes place April 7 - 29, 2008.

Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, two weeks after her father had died from cancer. She underwent a partial mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Olivia has been cancer-free for more than 15 years.

So, it’s true. Olivia does “honestly love you,” especially if you’re a cancer survivor!
