Beef…It’s What’s Organic

"Holy [bleep]! Jack Link’s makes an organic beef jerky that doesn’t have MSG in it!!! [bleep] yeah! The package says ORGANIC on it!" -text message I sent to one of my brothers as I saw the Jack Link’s ORGANIC Beef Jerky and noticed it didn’t have Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) added to it.
Yup. That was my honest reaction. In my opinion, MSG is the product of the devil. It’s horrible for our bodies on so many levels, one of the worst things being that it spikes one’s blood sugar level through the roof. Next time you are at the store pick up a bottle of ranch dressing or a bag of flavored potato or corn chips. Odds are you will see "Monosodium Glutamate" in the ingredient list.
As a person who tries to be self conscious of what I put into my body, I am constantly seeking brands that have eliminated MSG from its ingredients. Target’s Market Pantry beef jerky used to omit MSG but recently I noticed they started putting it in. I loved Target’s beef jerky. Now I won’t eat it. Sure it may not have been as tasty as Jack Link’s or Pemmican but the fact that it didn’t have MSG made it more appealing to me. I was pretty bummed when I noticed the change in Target’s new ingredient listing.
When my eyes met the packaging shown in the picture above, my faith in MSG-free beef jerky had been restored.
Okay, okay, I know what your thinking, "Why don’t you just buy your beef jerky at an organic or natural food mart/store?" Fair question and good point. I do try to buy organic brands but when traveling and in a protein pinch it’s nice to know I’m able to find a major beef jerky brand that doesn’t add MSG.
Adios,
Michael
**I’m aware that MSG can be disguised as different names or forms but for now this is a small victory in my pantry.
