Advertising Sales Up 30% in “All Black” Vogue Italia
The buzz surrounding the all-Black July 2008 issue of Vogue Italia is still going strong as Condé Nast, for the first time ever, is reprinting the issue to meet high demand.
According to fashion and entertainment blog Make Fetch Happen, “Even telephone book-sized upcoming September issues are feeling the pinch with American Vogue’s 50 page drop from last year and an overall page decline of 4%,” implying that Vogue Italia’s themed edition, featuring models of African decent, has revitalized sales.
This July 2008 issue is said to have come about by the lack of diversity on NYC Fashion Week runways and the prevalent notion among fashion ad reps that Black models are not marketable, don’t sell product and don’t increase magazine ad sales.
However for this Vogue Italia issue, A spokeswoman for Condé Nast said the company increased distribution of the All-Black issue by 40% in the U.S. and the company will also print another 10,000 copies to meet the demand for the issue.
Models in the issue include: Tyra, Tocarra Jones, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Pat Cleveland, Jourdan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, Chanel Iman, Veronica Webb, and Karen Alexander. For more info on the roles of influential American photographer, Steven Meisel and Franca Sozzani, Italian Vogue Editor in making the All-Black issue happen, read this.
