Is Twitter Twittering Away?

Usually you hear about new or recently developed social applications being all the rage and surrounded by lots of buzz, and then the brand trickles down to the average Joe and Jane as indispensible at some point.

However, Twitter is not enjoying this kind of success.

The site frequently has been riddled with technical problems, which has third-party developers abandoning ship. The developer community is predicting that once developers go, users won’t be far behind.

This may not shake and break the brand of a social app that is indispensible, but Twitter seems superfluous–you can do the same things it does for you without Twitter.

Although Twitter developers say that Twitter has “been pretty solid over the last few days,” this is of small comfort to developers who expect much more.

There are those who hold out some hope, reasoning that Amazon.com has invested a lot into Twitter for infrastructure support and redesign.

But like the abused housewife who is certain her alcoholic husband will “fix” his problem and come back normal, they say that Twitter will fix the infrastructure and then it will be “profitable.”

Read “profitable” as…it will turn into some commercial giant and flood the service with ads.

Twitter will probably sort out their scalability issues, but by then, their public image will likely be irreparably tarnished. If they haven’t even built up brand equity and they have these image issues, what else can we expect?
