Brand Icons: Kraft’s Wienermobile

Any brand worth its salt can produce a great promo or ad whose impression lasts a few years in the minds of its consumers. But a more telling example of greatness are the few brands that achieve an impression over several generations. That’s a brand worth not only its salt, but also its bologna.

In 1904, the entrepreneur-immigrant who was also a prescient marketer, Oscar F. Mayer, began branding his company’s meats to capitalize on their popularity. His was one of the first companies to volunteer for testing product purity in the US.

The first Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was created in 1936.…

Corporate Blogs and Public Disclosure

ZDNET is reporting that the Securities and Exchange Commission provided unanimous approval today for corporations to use Corporate Blogs as a means to release information that meets public disclosure requirements.

I don’t know that you’ll see many corporation taking advantage of this medium but there are some who have successful corporate blogs that could use this to provide information to the public. In those instances, there is the opportunity for unique conversation to develop around content usually reserved for faxed releases and obscure postings. This can position a corporate blog in a whole new way for some brands.

It’s additional proof that Social Media…

Celebrate the Olympics with Condoms!

A Chinese condom manufacturer, Elasun, is celebrating the Olympics in a refined, elegant and classy way: with clever Olympic themed condom advertisements.

The ads show athletic stick men with condoms in place of various sports apparatuses such as basketball nets, bicycle wheels, archery targets and gymnastic rings, explains the Trendhunter article.  The most creative of the series of ads? The ribbed condom  used to symbolize the water surface in swimming.

In the closing of the Trendhunter article, the author says,  “The Telegraph (UK) reported that “Olympic villages are reputed to be hotbeds of…

Gold is the Key!

I try not to ever double up on what I write for one blog on another.  However I thought this idea was so creative and fun that I had to double up  and share that the Golden Magazine will be hitting newsstands soon!

A new magazine is actually going to launch with a golden touch! Literally!

Kohl magazine will celebrate it’s launch with a cover that actually includes 91 grams of gold and 622 diamonds on the cover.

According to Trendhunter, it is estimated that this one magazine will cost $10,000 to produce!!

Kohl magazine is the UAE’s first and only women’s lifestyle and fashion…

More FROM Starbucks or More FOR Starbucks?

In the slow season, believe it or not there is a slow season, at Starbucks, the company recently announced they will be offering samplings of summer beverages to increase traffic throughout the summer season.

These sampling events have been in progress in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Washington for a few weeks and consumers are getting free small iced coffees on specific days with some restrictions.  Is this a good marketing strategy or simply a way to boost sales?

Another summer promotion from Starbucks, that has a different twist on it throughout the country,  is the offering a cold…

No Large For You!

Coffee resizeThe Chicago Tribune recently reported that Chicago-based Intelligentsia Coffee is phasing out its 20-ounce coffee and espresso beverages. Why? According to CEO Doug Zell, larger drinks end up “masking and adulterating the pure, intense flavors we work hard to source, roast and produce.” Nevermind the fact that theCoffee resize 12-ounce Coffee resizesize is the best-selling size. To me this is pure marketing genius, by accident, intention or both. Intelligentsia ends up looking…Intelligent. As THE Java Purists, they instantly crown themselves as the coffee to drink for the coffee aficionado. I am sure there may be other reasons for the change. But the for me this is a move…

Is it me or is your logo a little too sexy?

Good logo design is like good writing. When it’s done properly, it looks effortless. This doesn’t mean that designing logos is easy. It just looks that way.

When designers create a new logo, they typically walk away from their design and look at it at a later time so they can see it with fresh eyes. The following real world logos could have benefited from following this simple rule.

Picking your battles carefully

For years, PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) has done a noble job of focusing its efforts on animal rights issues in farming, ranching and the entertainment industry. But in this recent publicity stunt, they’ve chosen to jump the shark.

wimbledon pigeonsIn a recent Yahoo! news article, PETA is condemning Wimbledon for “cruel and illegal behaviour” for shooting pigeons who were dive-bombing and defecating around the courts during play.

Now, I understand the need to protect animals that are being abused or eradicated to the point of extinction. But since when does shooting a few pesky pigeons that have infiltrated a private…

Nike’s New Shoes - Good PR?

The next big thing!  Human Shoes!? Nike seems to think so!

Or do they?

nike_human_shoes2-731531.jpg

Personally, I find Nike’s new “Human Shoes” very odd, but definitely unique. And getting a lot of attention!

And I also question if anyone will even purchase these new shoes; let along wear them!

Maybe the PR they are receiving from the “shoes” is what they are looking for as opposed to the sales!

However, if you are in the market for a pair of human shoes, check out Nike stores worldwide!

What do you think of this idea from Nike?  Would you ever purchase (and wear) a pair?

Do you think Nike…

DC Spinsters. Do NOT Imitate

McCain caricatureAs we are thrust into this political season, it is hard not to take note of the grandiouse marketing moves each political party makes as they vie to be top dog. Casual observers can easily take note of the machine at work grinding out ads for radio, TV, outdoor, door-to-door, and telephone. Ever more now the web has created a new way of disseminating the brand message, solidifying it in time as a historical record. This week in US politics, the two presidential candidates were both caught flipping positions on previously stated Obama Caricaturepositions. In the business world, we know it is…

Firebrand Take 2

The concept formerly known as Firebrand has risen from the ashes in the form of a digital communications agency.

firebrand For those who don’t remember, or completely missed the first iteration (which would have been easy to do), Firebrand launched as an online source for the 30 second spot. The thought was that consumers wanted to watch thirty second spots all the time. Hmm.

Here’s a quote from the newly updated Facebook profile: “Many of you have been wondering what happened to Firebrand, the world’s first synchronous multi platform brand experience across TV, Web and Mobile. In its short but illustrious history, Firebrand”s…

Word of Mouth Advertising

Photobucket

As I continue my job search, I’m learning more and more about the decline of traditional advertising.

Newspaper job postings are relatively nonexistent these days - yeah, I already knew that. But even on-line, finding work in my desired field near my home, it’s pretty hard to come by.

But - I do have a distant in-law relative who works for an amazing publishing company not to far from my home. And I have a friend who works for an educational supplies company - turns out they’re looking to hire several different people for various positions. And then there’s….

Anyway. I could go on. But…

Suspended Bed Stunt Creates Great PR

In attempt to promote the very comfy beds at ANA Crown Plaza hotel, the actually suspended a bed on the side of a tall building and then  got someone to actually sleep in the vertical bed/billboard!  As part of their “Good Night, Good Tomorrow” campaign, the hotel hung a bed on the side of the Sony Building wall in Ginza, Tokyo. A  window cleaner then took part of the publicity stunt by suspending herself from the top of the building and staying inside the bed for a while, Trendhunter explains.
