Google Retracts Pact with Yahoo

No thanks to a government antitrust law, a supposed advertising partnership between Google and Yahoo did not materialize, choosing not to risk the possible sanctions of getting into a legal battle and of course damage its current status with existing valued partners.

It is more of a business decision. Apparently, legal issues are something that anyone would want to avoid especially if you are a big name in the Internet industry. Combining two giants in a projected multi-million dollar deal is something that is bound to draw lots of attention and of course who else would be the first to be on line?…

Super Creatives

For a business built on creativity, agency thinking can be pretty uncreative; we staff up when we win business and staff down when we lose it. Besides being an incredibly demoralizing process for everyone, this crazy job rollercoaster runs completely counter to the challenge of finding, hiring and nurturing creative talent.

I recently read about an agency in Atlanta called the SuperGroup who came up with a much better — and much more creative — solution to layoffs. Instead of letting people go when business is slow, they encourage their creatives to pursue their own creative endeavors. Employees were told that as…

Google’s Next Venture is Venture Capital

Google is looking to start a venture capital arm according to the Wall Street Journal. Google is known for business innovation, but this new venture concept will formally make Google the largest tech venture firm. Google has gone way beyond the search. They are currently investing in energy. They created ANDROID, the open source co-op for mobile phones. Google is always up to something.Google

Google vs. Cuil

Former Google employees created a new search engine that they claim is the largest search engine in the world. It searches three times more pages than Google and doesn’t use the Google Page rank algorithm. Cuil, pronounce “cool” is an old Irish word for knowledge. Cuil does not track user information like Google does and the user interface is really clean. I tried it and I like it. Give it a go and see what you think.

Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page…

Redesign of My[insert ad here]Space

A summary of MySpace’s redesigned hp:
Less Clutter. More Advertising.

Hmm. Is there a paradox in there somewhere? It’s been said that the redesign addresses a nagging problem that beleaguers social networking sites: pages have “the aesthetic appeal of the locker door of a 14-year-old high schooler.” Which led me to imagine the site as the voice of a 14-year-old whining to its parent, Fox Interactive Media.

“Why can’t I be pretty like X website?”
“I want to make money like the other websites.”
“Can I have a new navigation bar? A search tool? A video player? I need these in time for school to…

The World Goes Wiki

There has been a lot of talk recently about the Geoweb. In this world, geo-tagging cameras equipped with GPS know exactly where the picture was taken. Microsoft’s Photosynth wowed us with its ability to combine images of geo-tagged photos. All this technology is great, but what about more practical uses for global imaging technology?

Wikimapia is just that. It is a Wikipedia style reference on top of a Google Earth platform. You can search for businesses near your house or find historic sites close by. Your home might even be a historic landmark. I used it to check out London recently and I found…
